5 Things Blogging Has Done For Me

If you're reading this then you either love reading blogs or writing one of your own. Either way you'll know the immense pleasure a single blog post can bring to its' readers. This post is a bit of a thank you to the brands and bloggers alike that have supported me so far, as well as (hopefully) a bit of inspiration for you to maybe start your own.. come on what are you waiting for?!

1. Created Opportunities

Did i start blogging with the aim of making a fortune out of sponsored posts and quitting my job to write all day from the shores of Barbados sipping cocktails? Absolutely not and if that's why you're thinking of creating a blog then don't..no seriously. Blog simply because you love to write and want to share topics and products you're passionate about with the world.

Getting paid is always a great feeling but at the end of the day brands are in it for their own self-promotion and not for your overall success. A sponsored post here and there and a few gifted products have been a blessing but certainly not a reason to keep on the blog train.. hang on is that a saying? No...no it's definitely not..

2. New Blogger Friends

Before I started my blog a little over a year ago now I had no idea just how great and supportive the blogging community is. I've had nothing but encouragement and amazing feedback since launching The Guy On Trend, and also made some great friends along the way!

3. Better Self Confidence

Creating a blog is great fun but to get people to actually read it is a massive challenge, and one that is only overcome by doing a lot of self-promotion. Joining twitter chats and constantly communicating with brands and bloggers to swap ideas and discuss partnerships is a daily occurrence, and one that involves talking yourself up a lot. Over the past year I feel like i've learnt a lot of skills here and can really promote my brand to others.

4. Passion

Before launching The Guy On Trend I wasn't passionate about a lot of aspects of my life, and didn't have a huge array of hobbies to speak of aside from music. Blogging has given me a whole new sense of worth and motivation to succeed, which I can really feel works its way into other areas of my life. It's often so hard to keep motivated to blog when you're so aware that hardly anybody on Earth actually consumes your content, but if you believe in the quality of your posts that's what matters.

5. Creating Goals

My blogging hobby has really helped me set goals both for life and for The Guy On Trend. I now find myself planning out my weekends according to what content needs writing and it's really helping me make sure i get stuff done. I really want to start creating monthly blog goals like increasing my Bloglovin followers by 25 etc. This new addiction to goal setting has also started to translate into other areas of my life and that feels great.

Here's to another year of blogging and loving it in 2017! What has blogging done for you this year?

The Review | Bose QuietComfort 35

The new QuietComfort35 acoustic noise cancelling headphones from Bose are quite possibly the best quality pair I've ever worn, both in terms of sound and overall build quality. Now I'm by no means an audiophile or a headphones expert, but even I can tell that these are truly something special. I've had a couple of pairs of Beats by Dre before and they were great but for just a little more money you can trust appreciate your favourite songs with the QuietComfort35s.

Now these are by no means cheap so let's see what you get for your hard earned £289.99. In the box the first thing you'll find is this neat carry case, which is study enough to survive a flight or camping trip with ease. Inside you'll find your headphones along with a couple of handy accessories including an in-flight adaptor so you're not stuck with the AWFUL quality headphones we're forced to use on long haul flights! Great addition.

Now let's move onto the headphones themselves. In terms of build quality you'll struggle to find anything as luxurious as these for less than £300 on the market. The over-the-ear cups feel great and much more comfortable than the Beats Studio alternative. In just a few clicks you can connect to your  iPhone, iPod or any other bluetooth device and start listening in minutes.

The set up process was flawless. The noise cancellation technology in the QuietComfort 35s is some of the best I've ever experienced and is so powerful the first time you use them you feel almost dizzy like you're taking off in a plan when your ears pop. The silence is quite incredible and you'll struggle to hear people chatting on a packed bus or train - perfect!

Battery life also easily exceeds 20 hours so you won't be charging them more than once a week, which is a huge bonus but they also take less than an hour to charge so even if you're running low it's easy to give them a quick boost on the goo using the USB adaptor for plugging into a laptop.

The only negative I can really come up with is that they don't sound great when you choose to listen with the noise-cancelling function turned off. In fact you're probably better with a pair of Apple's out of the box headphones because these things sound BAD. You can see Bose has put a huge amount of effort into these but if you ever did run out of charge just do without.

The Bose QuietComfort Q35s are £289 and available here.

Guest Post | Gift Guide For Her

Here's my first ever guest post on The Guy On Trend,  by Niamh!

This is my first ever guest post and let me tell you I am beyond excited! I should probably start off with who I am and all that good stuff. I’m Niamh, I have been blogging for around 3 years, 2 if you include the countless amounts of times I have fallen out of love with blogging. I mainly post beauty related blog posts and dabble into YouTube-ing but I’m not partial to a good old lifestyle post. Now that’s over and done with let’s get onto the post!

A gift guide for her. Boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, dads and anyone else who needs a good kick up the ass to get the gift buying started listen up!

  1. Treat yo girl! – Get her an early Christmas Eve gift. Most women are complete and utterly stressed and exhausted by the time Christmas Eve rolls around. Buy her a nice cozy PJ set complete with matching slippers and dressing gown, throw in some Christmassy lush bath bombs and maybe even a face mask for good measure. Run her a bath and give her the few relaxing hours she deserves while you cook a meal. I swear any girl would melt into a big puddle if their significant other was to do this.
  1. Dads this one is for you!  don’t do the whole “smelly gift set” for yet another year. Think outside the box. Buy her a luxurious candle that she probably wouldn’t dream of buying for herself. At this time of the year us women love candles lit around the house or our bedroom, it creates a cozy and relaxing vibe.
  1. Got a gym lover on your hands? – I’ve got you sorted! Spoil her rotten and buy her a new full gym get up. Or create a cute gym survival pack, include mini body sprays, face wipes, a new water bottle, some hair ties and some cute trainer socks.
  1. Sentimental value – Is she all about making memories then documenting them? Go to your local craft sore and pick up a scrap book as well as all different little bits and bobs that she can use (tape, ribbon, stickers, stamps, embellishments). You can just stop here or you can go one step further and get some pictures printed off from one of the best memories you share together, write her a little not in the front of the scrap book and place all the items into a big Christmassy box.

I hope you enjoyed this post and will join me in the future over on https://niamhsprettythoughts.wordpress.com/blog/. I just want to take a moment to say a big thankyou to Matt for letting me feature on his blog!

The Review | Alpha Grooming Skincare

It's been a little while since I've written a post on my latest skincare favourites or gents grooming tips on the blog so I was thrilled when Alpha Grooming asked if I'd like to take a look at a few items from their brand new collection.

Alpha Grooming is a family run skincare brand from the West Midlands that specialises in creating high quality gents grooming products and gifts sets. They pride themselves on quality and only create small batches of their collections, which are infused with premium essentials oils that smell incredible..we'll get to those in a little while!

I started off by trying out the Mandarin, Lime & Basil Clay Facial Cleanser - £9.99*

This nourishing  handmade cleanser is enriched with Kaolin to remove and draw out impurities and from the first few uses I can already see and feel the difference. My skin feels so soft for hours after use and insanely moisturised to boot.

As I mentioned earlier, the presence of such unusual scents such as Mandarin and Lime give this cleanser a unique smell that instantly gave me the feeling of being at a luxury spa - when in fact i was just stood in my bathroom! It really oozes quality and feels great on the skin too. Not too oily but

At just £9.99 for the 100ml pump action bottle it's a real steal and now forms part of my daily routine.

Next up was the Mandarin, Lime & Basil Moisturising Gel - £12.99

This was easily one of the most revitalising and skin calming moisturisers I've ever used. My skin is a mixture of oily and dry so I'm always on the look out for a daily routine that helps my skint absorb moisture quickly, but without leaving a shiny layer behind. The Alpha Grooming gel certainly lives up to those expectations.
It's got the same unique Mandarin, Lime & basil fragrance as the cleansing gel, that somehow whisks you off to a luxury spa break just by unscrewing the jar. It's quite gloopy in the hands so you definitely only need a pea-sized amount in terms of application but once it's on the skin it soaks right in and as is the perfect accompaniment  to the cleanser.

Don't forget you save £5 on your next order over £20 from Alpha Grooming using code ALPHA5 at checkout!

The Review | Arrival

Arrival is a movie that plays around with your emotions, but never in a way that feels manipulative. This is an alien invasion movie with only a few aliens, a few explosions, and a twisty-plot that holds you comfortably by the hand into, and out of, the abyss. It’s an impressive accomplishment, but one that somehow lacks the sci fi thriller moments I was hoping for.

Our heroine is Dr. Louise Banks (Amy Adams), a linguist mourning the loss of her daughter to cancer. She's awoken in the middle of the night and asked to help a team of scientists unravel the mysteries behind the arrival of 12 alien spacecraft that have landed across all corners of the globe. She's tasked with making first contact with the aliens and trying to translate their language.

This is where the plot takes an odd turn and where I started to lose interest. The aliens are revealed within the first 15-20 minutes of the movie removing any kind of fear or tension that you'd normally associate with a theme such as this.

Before long Dr. Banks turns into more of a Dr. Dolittle as she engages in conversation with the beings and starts to understand their culture, and more importantly the reason for their 'arrival' on Earth
Without giving too much away, Arrival is an innately hopeful and pacifistic movie. Louise’s effort to understand the aliens, despite the fearful human reactions around her, makes a powerful case for communication over conflict.

At its core, it's a movie about language and communication. How are we able to connect and interpret others? If 12 giant alien ships, which kind of looked like Pringles chips, were to one day appear randomly across the globe, how do we interpret intent? That's the movie's ticking clock, uncovering the intent of the seven-legged squid-like aliens before the more alarmist elements of our society give in to paranoia and destruction.

Check out the trailer below and let me know what you think if you've seen the movie.

Top 5 Gifts For Guys - Oliver Bonas

It's that time of year when Mothers, Sisters, Girlfriends and the rest of the female population are on the hunt for a perfect Christmas gift for the guys in their life. Hopefully this post will give you a few hints. For this Top 5 I've had a browse around one of my favourite lifestyle brands for some inspiration - Oliver Bonas. They have a fantastic selection of gifts for all budgets. Enjoy!

1. Crosley Dansette Bermuda Console Turntable - £279

First up here's one for the vinyl-loving guy in your life. Crosley has always been a key player in record players but over the past couple of years has really exploded into popularity among twenty somethings everywhere. This is the console turntable, which is at the upper end of the price range for Crosley but certainly one of their most impressive players. It has removable legs so that you can put it on a table top if you prefer and boasts dynamic full range stereo speakers, which basically means it sounds incredible too. Although you can use external speakers or headphones if you like.

2. Marble & Copper Bar Tools Set - £60

Here's one for the guy that loves cocktail hour, but wants to create that same buzz at home! This great looking bar tools set includes a marble base and 100% copper rail and tools that will look at home on any side table along or drinks trolley with his favourite tipples.

3. Where Chefs Eat - £16.95

This next gift is one of my favourites - and incidentally the cheapest of the bunch! Where Chefs Eat is a book comprised of restaurant reviews not by mystery 'experts' but instead by over 600 of the finest chefs in the world. It's the ultimate guide to the best places to eat across various cities around the globe and must-have gift for the discerning foodie.

4. Carrara Marble Espresso Cups & Saucers - £18

Another marble item on the list. For the coffee lover in your life, this set of two espresso cups and saucers will make him want to get the kettle on straight away! Made from marble and packaged in bespoke Oliver Bonas packaging, these make a great gift.

5. Korres Men's Kit - £19

Korres is one of my favourite Mens grooming brands and this kit filled with minis of some of their best products would make a great Christmas stocking filler. It contains 2 shower gels, shampoo, shaving cream and an aftershave balm. Korres is a Greek skincare brand with roots in Athen's first ever Homeopathic Pharmacy. Based on its pharmacy experience in over 3,000 homeopathic remedies of herbal origin, the company today offers a natural and certified organic skin care range.

Thanks for reading, do you have any other Christmas favourites form Oliver Bonas this year?

THE PLAYLIST | SEPTEMBER SOUNDS

The first week or so of September has seen some seriously great album releases, so here's a few of my favourite tracks for the month so far. The big highlight has to be the new album from Bastille called Wild World. I've included my two absolute favourite tracks from the album 'Good Grief' and 'Send Them Off!' as they are the stand out sounds for me. It's a pretty chilled out album but these are the most upbeat and great for a commuting playlist or general chill.

Next up are a few chart toppers from the past few weeks including the new track from Sia as well as Get Low by James Vincent McMorrow, which is an incredible song from his new album released this week. There's also a great track on this Months playlist called Deja Vu by Post Malone. Something a little different from the usual folk/pop that tends to feature on these playlists but I actually really love it. Justin Bieber features on the track and really adds something cool to it. Check it out!

Titled by Christine & The Queens also features on my playlist for September. I think it would be worth adding the entire album to be honest! If you haven't checked her out then you are seriosuly missing out. It's like nothing Iv'e ever heard and Titled is definitely the best track featured on the record.

Apple's iPhone 7 Event Set For Sept. 7th

The iPhone 7 & 7 Plus

It's that time of year again when Apple enthusiasts along with thousands of journalists from around the world gather to find out all the details for the tech giant's latest releases. This year Apple is expected to release their 9th iteration of the best-selling smartphone of all time - the iPhone. However, early rumours have suggested that this year's model will stick very much to the design of it's predecessor the 6s but with one notable exception.. the headphone jack.

A lot of people have been extremely upset about the idea of 1. Having to purchase bluetooth headphones on top of the over £650 device or 2. Purchasing an adaptor from Apple to enable them to continue using their current 3.5mm ear buds. At first this seems understandable right? Of course it does.. but then removing the jack allows the iPhone to become slimmer and would allow you to both charge the device and listen to your favourite music through the lightening connector. It just depends on how much thickness affects your buying decision I guess.

The other notable rumour on design tweaks include the possibility of new colour options for the iPhone 7. Personally I'm not hoping for quite the array of garish options that the iPhone 5c had but both Space Black and a Deep Blue colour have both been spotted in production according to various reports so we'll just have to wait and see on that front - I'd definitely go for the Space Black! Just look at those mock ups below..
It's also likely that Apple will finally drop the 16GB base model for its flagship iPhone 7 & 7 Plus and instead lead with the 64GB, 128GB and a new 256GB variations. Who needs 256GB of storage these days I'll never know?! That's a ton of apps, photos and music!

With the event landing on the Wednesday it's likely that pre-orders would begin on Friday 9th September with a launch date two weeks later on Friday 23rd if Apple choose to follow previous launch times. So that's less than a month before it'll be in our hands!

Which model will you be going for or are you waiting for a refreshed design with the 10th anniversary iPhone 8 next year?

Finally a new MacBook Pro?

The release of a brand new iPhone isn't the only excitement surrounding this year's September event. There's also the possibility of a long awaited hardware update to the MacBook Pro, which has seen barely any refinement apart from processor spec bumps since mid-2013!

It's likely that if there's a release planned for Autumn of this year then the main selling point for the updated MacBook pro will be the addition of a touch sensitive OLED panel that would replace your current function keys. This panel is also rumoured to be dynamic to the app that you're currently looking at - the example below showing Spotify volume and track selector control. Pretty awesome!

Other improvements would likely be a move to USB C as well as the usual processor and RAM upgrades to give your Mac that extra boost. Is it worth trading up for a new one though? Who knows just yet but I think for most people it'll take a lot more than a touch-sensitive panel!

What are your most looking forward to seeing at Apple's September 7th event?

Etsy Favourites | August 2016

It's time for another look at some of the items I've been loving on Etsy over the past month. It always feels great sharing products from Etsy almost more than any other site because so much time has gone into people designing and/or making the items themselves! So here's my favourites for August 2016...

1.  Macbook Pro 'Colour Explosion' Hard Case - by RealDesignRocks

I've been thinking about investing in a hard case for my MacBook for a while now after getting a few surface scratches on my 2014 15" model. This is the 'Colour Explosion' model - named for obvious reasons - and I really love it! That Apple logo looks great in the middle of all that colour. RealDesignRocks also do a variety of other designs for Mac and will create an iPhone case to match if you like. £42 and available here.

2.  Record Player Stand & Vinyl Storage - by DerelictDesign

I got a Crosley record player for Christmas and I've been avidly collecting vinyls ever since (post to come very soon on my favourites!) but I'm still yet to find the perfect way to store them - until now! Here's the stand and storage unit from Derelict Design. It is hand made from high quality softwood timber and is fitted with Eames style hairpin legs for a classic look. This unit is fine sanded, stained and sealed with a dark ebony oil stain and final wax for a low-sheen, hardwearing finish.

It's got enough space to store hundreds of records, which should last me a while, plus it doubles as a coffee or side table. I've already got a small table that I keep my Crosley on but this would look so much better! Not cheap at £255 but it's solid wood and those metal legs look great too.

3.  Grow Your Own Coffee Kit - by PlantsFromSeed

This is such a fantastic idea! This kit includes everything you need to grow your own coffee plant from home and I can't wait to try it out. It would also make a perfect gift for any coffee lovers in your life! I'm not quite sure how long the plant will actually take to grow but it sounds interesting, looking forward to mine arriving sometime this week.

4.  Men's Handmade Leather Boots- by YGMoriginaldesign

I've been looking all over for a good quality pair of leather boots but can't seem to find any that quite do it for me. However, these look like they might just be the ones! They're handmade and you can even get your own logo or initial printed into the leather (although i'm not quite sure why!). They are also available in black but I much prefer the brown pictured below.

5.  Handcrafted Guitar Stand- by Arthur Guitars

Not long ago I bought a new Gibson guitar and I've been looking for a unique stand ever since to display it in my living room. This handmade hardwood one looks incredible and would be the perfect way to show off the new Gibson J-45!

Due to the hardwood construction it's also extremely strong and stable so you shouldn't have to worry about coming home and finding your prized guitar in pieces on the floor. Will definitely be ordering a couple of these I think!

That's it for this month. What hidden gems have you found on Etsy during August?

The Review | Stranger Things

I'll be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect when I started watching Stranger Things. I'd heard great things about it but Sci Fi mysteries aren't normally my kind of thing. But I thought why not give it a go? I've watched loads of other Netflix originals like House of Cards and the like so it must worth a watch, right?

Stranger Things is set in a small town in Indiana, USA during the 1980's and follows the story of a boy that mysteriously disappears one night without a trace and a group of family and friends that try and find out what happened. The plot thickens when the town-folk accidentally stumble upon top secret government experiment but soon realise they might be dealing with something out of this world - no spoilers I promise!

Balancing style and substance is always challenging for a series like Stranger Things, but the show is perfectly calibrated. It feels like watching a show produced during the era in which it’s set, but with the craft of today’s prestige television.

By its end, after only eight episodes, Stranger Things becomes darker and more frightening than its opening suggests. It's also somewhat hopeful. It devotes many scenes to the characters that movies don't have time for: the mother, the local police chief (David Harbour), the hunky bully (Joe Keery), the older sister who's almost a woman (Natalia Dyer).

The casts of horror movies tend to shrink as the climax approaches, with a "final girl" or heroic dude left to face off against evil in the ending. Here, it's all the people we've come to care about, some paired up in surprising ways, some revealing themselves as more than we expected. In that, they're like the show they inhabit. Netflix has truly struck gold with this masterpiece of a mini-series. Here's hoping for a second season!

Must-have Autumn Jackets

As Summer officially starts coming to a close (boo!) it's time to start thinking about your autumn wardrobe, and what better place to start than a statement denim or bomber jacket? Check out my favourites from the likes of ASOS and All Saints below.

My absolute fave has to be the khaki jacket from ASOS - only £32! Khaki has been a massive trend all year long so let's hope that extends into Autumn. It's 100% polyester hence the price tag but it looks great and is really lightweight so can be worn with a shirt even on slightly warmer evenings over the coming months.

I also love this classic denim trucker jacket from Levis. It's mid-weight so again could still be teamed with a shirt underneath. Looks great paired with a white tee and some skinny ripped jeans.

Weekly Wishlist - Penfield AW '16 Collection

This week Penfield, the iconic American outerwear brand, dropped it's Autumn Winter collection for 2016 so I thought I'd share a few of my favourite pieces.

The Mountain Parka is one of the original pieces from Penfield's first collection and very little has changed but that's no bad thing. It has a classic parka construction and the material although mostly a cotton/nylon mix never feels to plastic or cheap to the touch. In true parka style there's loads of pockets, some of which are so discrete you'll probably take a few weeks to catch 'em all (standard Pokemon reference...) It's available in a variety of bright colours too, which is great for rainy autumn days!
1. Hooded Parka £160    2. Knit Bomber £125    3. Crew Neck Sweat £70    4. Cotton Check Shirt £70

Penfield have climbed aboard the bomber jacket trend with the Eastport Knit Bomber, made from pure lambswool hence the £125 price tag. It's also got some really nice detailed around the cuffs and zip which make it an Autumn must-have. Also available in navy & black.

The Crew Neck Sweat featuring the iconic Penfield logo is a great addition to the Autumn Winter collection. It's made from super soft 100% cotton including a fleecy lining which feels great. Definitely one for the Wishlist and reasonably priced at £70

Last but by no means least is the Barrhead Check Shirt, which is another 100% cotton piece making it super lightweight and breathable. The cotton has also been brushed giving it more of a 'lived in' feel which looks great, although after a few washes the softness does tend to fade. The Barrhead is listed as classic fit which I wouldn't normally go for but I find Penfield normally fits a size smaller than expected anyway.

So that's it! Those are my favourite pieces from the Autumn Winter collection. Do you have any favourites? What other brands are looking great this season?
